Opening with power punk rock The Proof, this is a song that will get you nodding with appreciation. With a double fast beat in the chorus, frontman Jason Wilkes sings with vigor and passion, "I'll light the world on fire, Then I'm coming back for you, It doesn't matter what you're thinking now, Cause I'm gonna see this through". High energy passion is the best way to start any EP off.
A Guitar riff with a lot of delay starts the second track Direction and yes it does sound very U2, but that's all I'm saying on the matter. This is more pop than the EP opener and in comparison to the first track it is more friendly for the masses who listen to the radio.
The same can be said for Let It Burn, what I find surprising is how different the EP is from track 1 to 2 and 3. I thought we were going to have rock and roll throughout but it seems that the band are heading more towards the pop/rock sound and they do it very well. The tone of Let it Burn is of a high quality with a big power anthem chorus of "Because You go before us, None can come between us, Nothing has the strength to hold us down, Because You live inside us". A great song about God's fire burning inside us.
Move Like Daylight and The Stand take the energy of the first track and burst it back into life with these tracks. Actually the powerful, strong and positive message of Move Like Daylight is what holds this particular song together. The band sing "The rain might fall to try and slow me down, And I know, That the wind might blow to try and knock me down, But I know, That you carry me". This closing track sounds a lot like Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars, but still a great song even if there is a very clear comparison.
This isn't a bad EP at all from High Flight Society. At times I really liked it, but there are times I thought it was just OK. For me the strongest aspect of the EP has to be the lyrics, and the band must be commended for these, all with great positive messages about how we need God in our life no matter what or where we are in the long road of life. I would recommend to anybody to check out this band as they could have a bright future with a few more tweaks. Here is looking forward to the next batch of songs.
