Independent artist Zane Vickery brings hope into our season of despondence with his debut LP, Breezewood. Produced by Brendan St. Gelais ( Corey Kilgannon, Carver Commodore, McKenzie Lockhart) and mixed/ mastered by Chris Bethea (Penny & Sparrow, Sleeping At Last), this freshman effort showcases Zane as both a poetic songwriter and a powerful musician.

What I gathered from the first play of the debut album from Zane was the fact that it was a real songwriters story kind of album. The album as a whole is led by the piano and the driven vocals of Zane Vickery.

What I gathered from the first play of the debut album from Zane was the fact that it was a real songwriters story kind of album. The album as a whole is led by the piano and the driven vocals of Zane Vickery.

Zane grew up surrounded by the foothills of the Carolina Piedmont. It was there he learned to love the stories of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Richard Adams. He’s since moved away from his childhood home, but the stories are still with him. A stay-at-home father and musician, Zane lives to cultivate beauty within his family and community. He holds court along the coastal salt marshes of Beaufort, South Carolina, with his wife, three children, two dogs, and four cats.

So what did I make of Breezwood as an album? The answer is simple, I loved it. The songs themselves felt very homely, or it felt like I had already known them for a while. This might be down to the power pop melodic hook sounds of the 2010's that the songs sound like in the main, or because they are clear stories being told from the soul of the artist. What I do know is that the songs felt warm and enjoyable after listening to them a few times. Whatever the reason this album ticks the boxes for me, Breezewood hit the right chords with me from the first listen.

There are many powerful songs on here, but no matter what the musical style or even what the melody is doing, it's the hook of the songwriting that keeps you coming back for more. The songs mark childhood’s passage into the adult world of dangers and opportunities alike add on top of that the lyrical energy of a stage musical and you have this album. Overall for me, I really enjoyed, not just once, but after many plays I was still enjoying.
