Marvin Sapp has just released a new album titled I Win. Marvin was introduced to the gospel community by Fred Hammond as a member of the vocal group Commissioned. "I am a preacher - called by God - who happens to sing," is the way he defines his ministry.
Sapp's previous releases as a solo artist started with the self-titled Marvin Sapp, his solo debut for Word Records in 1996. He went on to release Grace & Mercy: Live (1997); Nothing Else Matters (1999); I Believe (his 2002 Verity debut); Diary of a Psalmist (2003); Be Exalted (2005) and Thirsty...

I didn't realise the album was recorded live until the opening screaming and clapping from the crowd. The only real bad point of the album is that once the songs start and the clapping dies down, at times you don't really feel like it's a live album. This could be seen as a good thing as the quality of the recording is so good and the band and singers are that amazing, that they sound like they have spent days getting it right in the studio.
I do love the sound Marvin has created for this album. This is Gospel music at its best. It sounds like early Israel Houghton music and you can hear the influence of people like Fred Hammond, and that is no bad thing.
Teach My Hands To War and I Belong To You have an edgy fast tempo Gospel pace to them as songs. Yet it's when Marvin takes the beat down to a more soulful tone in songs like Never and I Win that we hear what an amazing voice this singer has. If you want to hear a good collection of Hymns together as one medley, look no further than track seven, The Hymns Medley.
If you're looking for a solid Gospel album you will not go wrong with this release. Marvin is a strong vocalist who creates classic Gospel sounds and songs that people will love. I enjoyed this album even if it didn't blow me away with something new. You can't step away from the fact that Marvin Sapp has a strong album with 'I Win'.
