Ooberfuse Join Forces With Typhoon Survivors For 'One Reality' Single

Feb 09 2015

London-based band Ooberfuse have joined forces with typhoon survivors living on the shore-line where the deadliest ever typhoon struck land for their new single 'One Reality', released 9th February 2015.

Although many from the front-line fishing village, fortunate to survive the recent natural disaster, have fled in search of safer dwellings others, in defiance, have remained behind.

"In Tacloban town we were told that 2 of the ships brought in-land by the unprecedented storm surge in November 2013 were still intact", said Cherrie, front-woman of the band.

"Out of curiosity we drove out of town in search of the beached ships, surviving remnants of typhoon Haiyan that, thanks to the various media reports, have come to symbolise the devastation. We were surprised to find that although many died in the typhoon or had fled nevertheless there was still a small community living a traditional life-style on the shore-line. When we asked if they would like to take part in our music video they jumped at the prospect."

Hal St John from the band adds, "Because my clothes and shoes were totally drenched following the signal 2 typhoon from the day before I was not really appropriately dressed for a video shoot. Wearing only flip-flops, I was besieged by swarms of red ants who, enraged that I had inadvertently disturbed their nest, decided to gnaw angrily on my feet. Nothing however could distract from the overwhelming warmth and joy in the children and adults who crowded in to be part of the shoot. Some fishermen took us out in their narrow bamboo fishing boat to film their make-shift houses from the sea. One of them pointed to a tall coconut tree on the edge of the narrow gravel beach and said the wave reached the tree-top.

The only reason his house survived was because a huge Japanese freight-liner, now 100 yards from his front door, broke the full force of the wave as it was propelled inland by the force of the surge."
