When I reviewed the new Leeland album, I noted that it reminiscent of a Coldplay album. Well, The Glorious Unseen's new album The Hope That Lies In You, would out-trump it; easily. I guess the comparison isn't helped by the fact that lead vocalist Ben Crist sounds uncannily like Chris Martin, but being backed by heavy keys and light guitars on the majority of songs probably doesn't help the case much either.

All that makes it sound like I don't like Coldplay, or Leeland or The Glorious Unseen but that isn't the case. I guess for me music has to fit into an activity; it's a driving in the car album, it's a party background music album, it's a quiet day at the office album. For me Coldplay has never fit into a box and The Glorious Unseen seem to be following that for me.
Musically, it is very interesting in places, and there are moments where you will stop and want to skip back a bit to hear a really great little riff or melody again, but it isn't interesting enough to keep me entertained on a long journey. Lyrically, it is beautiful, honest, simple and soul-stirring which makes it too deep to have on as background music without the words sinking in.
Reading Crist talk about the bands humble beginnings in small home groups playing on an acoustic guitar and their progression to this second album it seems to make sense a bit more. The band are about nothing more or less than bringing people closer to God and who needs drum machines, rocking riffs or killer harmonies.
What you need is beautiful crafted, subtle musical arrangements and heartfelt, passion filled vocals and this album has them by the bucket load.
