Anchor

Anchor

Colton Dixon asserts his strengths as a Christian pop/rocker on his eclectic sophomore album, Anchor. A seventh-place finish on the 2011 season of American Idol brought this Tennessee-based artist to widespread attention; his debut release, A Messenger, confirmed his multifaceted artistic potential. Anchor is a confident follow-up, benefitting from songwriting input by such notables as tobyMac, Matthew West, and Ben Glover. Lyrically, the album favors inspirational themes that acknowledge the fears and doubts standing in the way of redemption. Dixon does well with upbeat, synth-drenched worship tunes like “More of You” and “Limitless.” Whether he’s sailing on techno grooves (“Echo,” “Fool’s Gold”) or flashing some Aerosmith-esque swagger (“Loud and Clear”), Dixon sings with both style and conviction. His most personal moment comes with “Through All of It,” a piano ballad that touches on both his spiritual struggles and career challenges.
