Back with his first remix album in seven years, TobyMac releases 'Dubbed & Freq'd: A Remix Project'. The album is basically new remixes of some of TobyMac's biggest songs from his latest albums 'Tonight' and 'Portable Sounds'.
His record company says, "Toby's unique blend of rock, pop, hip hop and urban styles is perfect for the remix treatment and brings an entirely new sound to his songs". They could just about be right with this, as it is a really fun and enjoyable remix album.

His record company says, "Toby's unique blend of rock, pop, hip hop and urban styles is perfect for the remix treatment and brings an entirely new sound to his songs". They could just about be right with this, as it is a really fun and enjoyable remix album.
For those who know very little about this talented ex DC-Talk singer, TobyMac has over 10 million album sales to his name since he started out alone. His first three solo projects received RIAA Gold status and Grammy nominations. His latest album 'Tonight' garnered him the highest sales debut of his solo career with over 78,000 units and a number 6 Billboard Top 200 debut. The album was also named as iTunes Best Christian Album of 2010 and recently took home the Dove Award for 'Best Rock Contemporary Album of the Year'.
I think you can guess how this album is going to sound and you would be right. TobyMac has created a greatest hits list of songs from his last few albums and given the tracks to some great DJ's and remixers and let them do what they want to the track. And to be fair, most of these versions are well worth releasing on an album as they are very good.
I really enjoyed this album, and for me some of the track have even been improved from their original versions. Of course there is much more of a dance element to the songs now, with different beats added to the original versions - you would expect that from a remix project. Even slow and beautiful track City On Our Knees has a more chilled out vibe to it. But for me the best part of the album is the upbeat numbers like Tonight and Made To Love.
There might be a few of you that think that these remixes have ruined the original songs, and that's an opinion some will always have about remixes. You might love the originals so much that it's like someone has spoilt a great painting by adding their own thoughts about it. But on the whole, and in my opinion, TobyMac has entrusted some of the best in the business to get the best out of these track and make them into their own interpretation. And on the whole they do a great job with them.
