God Bless': a compilation album featuring their very best work. However, this is no ordinary 'greatest hits' package, MIC have truly set the benchmark for the way it should be done.
Rather than simply place their best songs onto a disc, founding member Steve Rothquel has recruited eight of the band's most prolific ex-members (including George Mhondera and Quintin Delport, known in the UK for their involvement with The Tribe) to re-record ten of their best-known tracks. This move has ensured that the album is fresh and relevant, that the production can still hold its own in today's Christian music scene, and that long term MIC fans are not paying for something they already own. It's a smart decision, and hopefully one that will set a trend for 'best of' albums in the future. 'Good Night... God Bless' also promises a bonus DVD with live footage from their final reunion gig, an array of special features, and a digital folder bursting at the seams with fifty of MIC best loved hits in MP3 format.
But in spite of this, the songs on the album itself vary in quality. On the one hand, MIC classics 'Catch Me' and 'Superhuman' benefit greatly from the re-recording. The high production values act as the perfect showcase for the infectious lyrics and original rhymes ('I've got a bad case of conscience cancer, but I'm a sinner who's found the answer'). A couple of other standout tracks include the album's closer 'Runaway', which is strongly reminiscent of recent Andy Hunter, and the catchy 'I Am Yours'. On the down side, many of the tracks at the heart of the album suffer from either sounding too similar to one another, or from a cheesy 'boy-band' style ('Psychedelic' being a prime example).
But on the whole, 'Good Night... God Bless' serves as a solid and comprehensive retrospective of MIC's fantastic career. Flawed it may be, but you'd struggle to find another album that can showcase Christian dance/hip-hop material almost twenty years old in such a polished and contemporary way.
