I had to get that comment off my chest as that opening track is wonderful and uplifting. Sorry for jumping ahead so quickly but let me introduce to you Joy Enriquez and her new album 'The Call'.
As a former actress, original series TV star, and spokesperson for L’Oréal Hair Products, Joy Enriquez is anything but new to the entertainment industry. Wife of famed Grammy Award winning music producer and label executive Rodney Jerkins, and proud mother of four children, Joy Enriquez spent years singing background on DreamWorks and Disney soundtracks such as “The Prince of Egypt” (Whitney Houston/Mariah Carey) and “Lady and The Tramp II.”
Launching her solo career in 2000, Enriquez released her self-titled debut album on Arista Records, which featured Grammy Award winning industry executive Kenny ‘Babyface’ Edmonds as the co-producer. Following the release, Joy realized her calling was in the faith-based community and began to pursue that direction for her life.
So we now move onto The Call. What jumped out to me as a listener is how Joy flicks between acoustic, country and out and out pop songs with such ease. This gives the album a few different sides and genres to enjoy, no matter what your own preference is.
After the foot thumping opening of O Happy Day we move to 'Conquer' which is a big powerful pop track. Think inspirational words being belted out by a big voice that you could listen to every day of the week. And that's the sound and feeling you get from that song.
Joy's voice is something else. She has a voice that doesn't get lost in these big song. Not many artists could sing 'Walking on Water' and not get drowned out by the melody and music, Joy doesn't.
The themes and big powerful songs and even bigger vocals filter through on most tracks. This keeps the listener going back for more, it did for me. Her voice is not only powerful, there is more to Jay than that. Her voice is smooth, creative, and soulful and can of course punch out a tune.
To go along with such a voice there needs to be great songs. 'The Call' has them. 'Shelter' is an amazing song, it's actually a very simple musical song but you wouldn't say that from the chords and sounds that are going on. I was blown away with this song. Title track 'The Call' starts off with just a piano, but the hushed voice of Jay make this a spine tingling track. The same could be said again for the inspiring '70 000'. Jay spills her soul out in this song as she does with the whole of the album.
From big ballads and big pop songs to funky numbers, 'Lord I Need You' moves the album to a more acoustic worshipful feel. As I said, there many sides to this album and this is another side that Jay does so well. To then add another angle to Jay's musical side, she sings 'Nothing But The Blood' with a jazz/gospel feel to it that is truly stunning. Are there no boundaries to this female vocalists' range and style of vocal quality?
If I thought this album was one thing or another 'Wonderful' flips out the modern dance beats to push this album into yet another creative direction. You really do feel like you have been on a bit of a musical journey with these songs. At least you know you will not get bored with this album, it really does keep you on your toes.
I know when I really like an album - it's when I want to put it back on straight away and enjoy it without thinking of it as an album to review. This album was put back on straight away once I had finished writing my notes. In summary this album has so much going on that it's highly enjoyable, but in simple terms, Jay's vocals and the quality of songs kept drawing me back again and again to have a listen. This has been the easiest 5 star review I have written in a long time.
