The band formed in February 2014 after solo artist Courtney Sapp, drummer Cliff Gore (who had been in previous bands with Courtney), and bassist Erin Burkhardt joined to play a battle of the bands. They shredded the battle, took home the title and We Were Once was created. After the battle, Erin Burkhardt decided to become a member and later, her brother, Zach Burkhardt, after hearing the band's plan and mission. The mission for We Were Once is to spread light in even the darkest places, leaving the church walls to witness through music inspired by their personal testimonies and life experiences.
We Were Once has shared the stage with bands such as Emery, Norma Jean, RED, Family Force 5, Newsboys, Disciple, and Seventh Day Slumber, just to name a few. As far as achievements, Courtney has been nominated for Carolina Music Awards "Best Rock Female" three years in a row (2014-2017). The band released their first single to radio in 2017 with their song "Safe & Sound", which hit Top Ten on Billboard's Christian Rock charts.
