Ijante describes herself simply as a ‘Child of God’. Her formative years were spent growing up in a household where music was prominent. Her mother (who had migrated to the UK from Jamaica) exposed Ijante and her siblings to some of the best international singers as she sought to cultivate their musical talents. Ijante has vivid memories of childhood piano lessons with a no-nonsense instructor, a grand piano occupying pride of place in the family ‘sitting room’, and hours spent rehearsing songs that were to be performed in church. Ijante and her sister Collette subsequently became requested singers within the churches and schools they attended. However, as time passed, ‘life happened’ and the tentative relationship with music was curtailed.
Although she chose to pursue an academic rather than music career, Ijante maintained her affinity with music as her particular outlet for ‘expression of soul’. As the owner of an extensive record collection, her home was constantly filled with the sound of music. Her children (and neighbours) were subject to her daily ‘concerts’ as she sang along to her favourite female vocalists of different eras (including Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Nina Simone, Esther Phillips, Chaka Khan, Patti Austin, Jean Carne, The Emotions, Phyllis Hyman, Anita Baker, Patti Labelle, Aretha, Deniece Williams, Whitney, Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, Jill Scott, Fantasia, LeAndria Johnson, The Clark Sisters, Yolanda Adams, and Kim Burrell to name a few)! Since 2013, her love of music has additionally been expressed through her weekly stint as a radio music DJ.
In the late 1980s, Ijante discovered her talent for songwriting and penned a number of songs. However, those songs were subsequently filed away because ‘life continued to happen’. Fast forward to late 2018 and her aptitude for songwriting was once again stirred up. Since that time, Ijante has crafted a new collection of songs within the gospel music genre. The dots have been rejoined.
Ijante has come to the realisation that her songwriting talent is a God-given gift that is to be used for His glory. She wants her music to connect with, and bless audiences both inside and outside the church community.
