With raw honesty, the song draws a sobering connection between our rebellion and the wounds Christ endured: the nails in His hands and feet, the stripes on His back. Ultimately, it becomes a desperate cry for divine help–to put our flesh to death and to love and serve Him with our whole hearts.
"I wrote this song because I think it's easy to normalize sin, and I don't want to do that anymore," shares Ethan David (Psalms Of David). "It's a sobering reminder that my sin is the very reason Jesus had to hang on that cross–and I'm contributing to His death every time I choose it. If I can honestly ask God to search my heart, knowing it isn't clean, He'll reveal what needs to change, and my heart will break for that. As 2 Corinthians 7:10 says: 'For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There's no regret for that kind of sorrow.'"
