Beth has managed to incorporate her love for poetry into the lyrics. Add to that her talent in being able to play Grade 8 piano, guitar, clarinet and saxophone, and clearly Beth is a very able musician and songwriter.
The single Arise & Shine starts of with Beth playing piano, this mid tempo number is about the light of God shining through you. The best lyric in the song that jumped out at me is, "Don't light a lamp and put it under a bowl, Put it on its stand to give light to the house". A very creative way of saying something that has been said a few times before in songs. Beth has a nice soft tone to her voice and this helps the song along. Hopefully in the future we will hear more of this voice.
With an ever growing genre of solo songwriting women in the UK at the moment, this isn't the easiest market to break into. With the likes of Cathy Burton, Esther Alexander, Claire Hamilton and Phillipa Hanna all releasing albums, there are a lot of similar artist out there, yet at the same time there are emerging artists like annajo and now Beth Baker. My encouragement to Beth, and any up and coming female singer, would be to keep pushing, keep writing and keep singing the songs God gave you. They will encourage many people who hear them.
