James came to my attention when Louder Than The Music featured a news item about him touring with Marc James. Both singers and their bands will be joining together for a UK tour titled 'As One - The Worship Tour' this Spring. The ten-date tour continues through until 28th May with a concert in Cheam, London.
The majority of the songs written on the album are by James himself, saying that he does share song writing credits with Josh Gifford on Lift Up My Gaze and with Marc James on I Worship You Now. Not only has James Hellings written with some great songwriters, on this album he has also drafted in talented musicians like Matt Weeks on Bass, Ed Carlile on drums, Andre Antonio on acoustic guitars and Stu G (Delirous, OSS) on electric guitar - you can hear his distinct electric guitar work throughout the album.
I really like this album, each song brings glory to God and isn't that what all good worship albums should do? The album is of the style of mid tempo rock worship, and the album does tend to lean towards a strong use of the electric guitar, but used cleverly to not overpower the songs (You Are Worthy and Nothing In This World). What I found with James Hellings' debut album is that the songs aren't intrusive, they are there to be used in times of worship and are strong worship songs, but will not bully you into worshiping God, they take you to the throne room in your own time.
Let the song All Hail Jesus wash over you, with an atmospheric electric guitar adding to the worshipful moment. The songs Undivided and Led Like A Lamb are two other strong songs on the album, both written with one thing in mind, to be used to worship God. This talented singer/songwriter knows how to write great songs like that.
