It was in June 2011 that I reviewed the 6 track EP called Quota from Eleventyseven. Looking back at that review I used the term 80's on more than one occasion, but my issues about the EP wasn't the songs, it was that the EP "moves from punk rock to high school rock to pop too easily and quickly". Thankfully, ladies and gentlemen, I can now tell you about the full album, Sugarfirst which takes the best songs from that EP and makes it into a proper album.

Eleventyseven are a pop/punk/rock group from Laurens, South Carolina, who were formed back in 2002. The band are made up of three members, Matt Langston on lead vocals and guitar, Davey Davenport on bass and Jonathan Stephens driving the band on the drums.
The band started off as most small bands do with independent self releases, but they then caught the attention of Flicker records. Their major label debut And The Land Of Fake Believe was released back in 2006 and gained complimentary reviews, what followed was second album Galactic Conquest in 2007 and Adventures in Eville in 2009.
The band on this album have kept the 80's synth modern pop with tracks like Ghost and Give It Up, which are catchy songs, and even have dance elements to them. Silent Symphony has a slower groove and tempo that could easily be compared to something by Owl City. Good tune, very radio friendly. But then the album has in your face fast beating tracks like Don't Want To Fall and opening number Wasted.
The latter part of the album, tends to have a more upbeat tempo to it, with tracks like Milk The Lightning, Book Of Secrets and Divers In A Hurricane. All these tracks have a dance synth element to them and are very catchy too. Upbeat songs that just make you smile when you listen to them.
Sugarfirst is the prefect album to put on in the background before you head out to meet some friends. Don't get this album if you are looking for an acoustic rock worship album, this album has a bit of swagger, but in a playful way.
Elentyseven have somehow managed to mix the pop/dance/punk/rock genres together on one album without it sounding like it doesn't flow. The more and more I listen to this album with it's catchy choruses, the more they got infused in my head and they stuck out like a sore thumb compared to a lot of Christian music around at the moment. I know that sounds a bit bizzare, but it's one of those sore thumbs that has one of those smiley face plasters on it, and they always make you smile.
