Devin McGlamery has been producing music for years. He joined Ernie Haase and Signature Sound as lead singer in December 2009, where he still remains today. Prior to that he had a five-year stint as lead and tenor for southern gospel's Grammy-nominated Karen Peck & New River. Now the singer is about to release his new solo album "Love is a Verb".
What you realise from the moment you start listening to this album is that this guy can really sing. He has such a rich, warm and strong vocal that you can see why he has been in so many vocal based bands over the last few years.
And this comes over very well on this recording.
Devin's vocals are one of the many reasons to get this album. He also has some very strong tracks to go with his classical, theatrical, rich vocal. Opening title track Love Is A Verb is a soulful number. There is real warmth in the song and with the resonant vocals of Devin this a stunning start to the album.
The Gospel sounds continue with the track Hold On, Help Is on the Way. The song has some very funky sounding guitars which got me swaying and dancing to this moving tune. I loved hearing the big Gospel choir singing the chorus of "Hold on, Help Is On The Way". Wonderful stuff.
The start of the album has a very American Gospel feel to it. But we suddenly move into a country sound in the track From My Rags To His Riches. One of the strongest part of this song is the super harmony vocals in the chorus. Some truly stunning sounds on this one. The track I Will has some lovely distorted lead guitar mixed with some classic piano, together you wouldn't think it would work, but it does!
As the album progresses the sound flicks between soul, gospel and country. This doesn't disjoint the album, as the different styles work together perfectly. I Tasted Your Water has a really lovely sound, it's such a smooth and rich sounding track that you can not help but be drawn into the song. While I Still Can is a sweet track about family life and Devin sings these story-telling lyrics very very well.
As Long As You Will Walk With Me sounds like it should be in a Broadway show. It even has a massive key change. The same could also be said for the musically powerful When He Was On The Cross, which has some 'ohh' moments with the epic Gospel choir.
Devin McGlamery has produced a very warm, soulful and rich gospel album. His voice is truly remarkable, singing the low notes very well and then belting out the bigger notes with such ease. If you enjoy a mix of Gospel, Country and a belting voice, then this album is for you. This singer has some great storytelling lyrics that come over in a way that the listener feels like they have been on the journey with Devin.
