Tom McConnell describes himself as a "Mustachioed Irish Troubadour with as much soul as Ray Charles' left shoe". If that sounds interesting, wait till you hear his brand new EP, 'Handiwork'.
When Tom sings and plays his guitar I always feel as ease. Quality musicians and songwriters do that to you. They leave you with the sense that you can sit back and just let the music hit you. The moment this EP started, I just got lost in its beauty.

The folk inspired 'Handiwork' is the perfect example of the quality of Tom's work. The banjo and guitars sound so rich in tone and this compliments the vocals that seem to be sung with a real sense of ease. This happy rich tone of a song is a great track to get your teeth into.
'Old Hymns/New Hearts' continues with the acoustic folk sound, but strangely and thankfully this doesn't sound like a carbon copy of other similar bands. Tom very much has his own style that shines through these songs.
The EP moves lovingly into the ballad-esq 'And Can It Be'. The sweet sounds that pour out of this song are truly something else. Tom's vocals move into a whole new level with this song. The EP closes with the most country, banjo led song I have heard in a while, 'The Wedding Song'. This upbeat, summery folk number took a while to grow on me, but once I got it, I really appreciated it as a strong quality song.
This is a well crafted EP that Tom McConnell should be proud of. You can tell he has taken his time to write, record and produce these songs, but not only that, these are quality tracks which I couldn't stop singing along to. If you are thinking, I want to hear some new music, well please let me introduce to you the wonderful and talented Mr Tom McCconnell and his new EP 'Handiwork'.
