You plan to release 12 tracks internationally this year. Tell us about your latest releases 'Just Getting Started' and 'Nothing Else Matters’?
It’s our passion to give the church songs to sing and the unchurched songs they can connect with. Both songs are a perfect representation of our vision for North Point Worship. “Nothing Else Matters” is a soulful, congregational reminder that nothing can satisfy but Christ, and “Just Getting Started” is a fun, pop-driven tune that inspires us to live in hope and anticipation for what God is doing. These are two core values our team holds to, and I think these songs are a perfect way for us to start 2020.
You changed your name this year. Tell us about the reason behind the name change?
Previously, we went by North Point InsideOut. We took that name because when we first began to make music, we largely wrote the songs for our youth ministry, InsideOut. As our band has progressed over the years, we wanted to change our name to better reflect the broadening of our musical style. Students still have our heart, but we desire to write worship songs for everyone.
It must be hard taking a song that was written for the local church and turning it into a song to be released, how do you guys go about doing that?
Truly, our heart is always local church first. I think when you come at writing songs with that in mind, the pieces come together. When we write, we have our people in mind; what would they sing, what would connect with them? And if it connects with them, we can only assume it might connect on a larger scale.
In your opinion how has the music Industry changed over the years?
I think today is one of the coolest eras to make music because of the ease with which you can share what you have created. Anyone can upload a record they’ve made in their bedroom to Spotify, and it’s instantly accessible to the world. While that creates an enormous amount of content, I’ve personally found some of my favorite artists this way. Years ago, that wouldn’t have been possible.
Does it get harder writing fresh new songs?
Sometimes it can get discouraging when trying to write because, in honesty, everything has already been written. I think it’s more authentic to try to write something true and personal than to focus on writing something fresh. And sometimes you’re lucky enough to get both!
If you could work with any songwriter, who would it be and why?
Personally, I’d love to write with Sean Curran. I think he has a way of crafting lyrics that are startlingly new, but they also feel so natural and obvious. That’s such a talent!
How would you describe your style of music and what are your influences?
Personally, I’m heavily influenced by hip hop, R&B, and soul music. But I’m mostly just inspired by anyone who passionately makes music. I value authenticity above any particular style!
How would you define success in your career?
Creating something that helps people understand themselves and Jesus with a little more clarity.
What is your favourite album of all time?
Borderland by John Mark McMillian. Every track is genius.
You're stuck on an island, it's hot, you only have enough battery life left to listen to one song on your phone. What track is it?
“I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Whitney Houston
What does the next year hold for North Point Worship?
2020 will be a defining year for us, especially as we explore this new avenue of broader corporate worship. We hope to grow in friendship with each other, understanding of God, compassion for others, and skill in communicating the greatest Story ever told to people who know the story and those who don’t. We really believe this is only the beginning!
