UK Worship Leader Ian Yates releases Part 2 of his 'Between The Joy And The Sorrow'. Many of the singles from this, and Part One, have already been picked up for radio play across UK, Europe, Scandinavia, Australia and the USA
Yates says, "I wanted to write really honest songs, I’ve always tried to write songs of truth and authentic songs of hope. These songs are born out of the last two years as we’ve navigated this pandemic. Throughout this time I have come back to a simple trust in God. Yates says, "I wanted to write really honest songs, I’ve always tried to write songs of truth and authentic songs of hope. These songs are born out of the last two years as we’ve navigated this pandemic. Throughout this time I have come back to a simple trust in God. Often I found myself disappointed with the things I’d seen. I found myself getting frustrated and lost in the opinions of people, the many perceptions of God, the incorrect prophecies, the politics and politicians."
And Ian has done just that, written honest songs that don't shy away from the brutal honest questions that I think we all at time ask, but are perhaps too shy, nervous or worred to say publicly, for many reasons. Yet Ian here has made an EP that does just that but with great music. Musically, Yates found inspiration in a number of singer/songwriters including, 70’s folk singer Nick Drake, Foy Vance, Alexi Murdoch, Bob Dylan and the ‘Nebraska’ album from Bruce Springsteen. Many of the songs are stripped back musically focusing on the lyrical content
The track 'What Does It Mean To Follow Jesus?' is a reflective song about questioning a few issues, and asking the question "do we live in true surrender?" Sometimes the hard questions have to be asked, but Ian does it in a respectful way. Moving on we head towards the track 'Between The Joy And The Sorrow', I love the attitude of the vocal delivery on this track, this has a little bit of indie rock swagger.
Ian's sixth album, released in two parts - Part 1 and Part 2 'Between the Joy and the sorrow' is a collection of honest songs of living in the tension of life's joys and sorrows. The whole release has a rock and roll indie attitude to it, a creative attitude of Ian making music he is truly comfortable with making. The song 'Wolves' is a very clever song, for me the track 'Home' is probably the most rounded song on the EP. 'Never Alone' is a power ballad which is so powerful, you can hear the emotion in Ian's voice from the start. Add to that the melodic delivery of the track and you have a song that hits the soul.
What I loved about this EP isnt just it's pure honesty, or the fact it really spoke to me personally where I am or have been over the last few years of my life. It's the passion and emotion of Ian's voice. Ian has always made great songs, pure honest songs, but here he has properly pulled out everything from his heart and left nothing on the table for these two projects. I can't help but encourage you to really listen to this release.
