Bluetree are an Irish Contemporary Christian Music (CCM)/Christian rock. This band is known for its hit song, "God of this City", which was vaulted into international popularity when it was covered by Chris Tomlin on the Passion: God of This City and Hello Love albums.
Bluetree originated at Strandtown Christian Fellowship church in 2004 but is now based in Exchange Church Belfast. According to lead singer, Aaron Boyd, Bluetree was born out of frustration. "I was frustrated with the idea that worship is only to do with your heart. I don't really agree with that. It's bigger than just your heart attitude towards something. Like the idea that music can be secondary and as long as you love Jesus, that's fine! I don't think that's right." Bluetree originally consisted of five guys and then the mighty Pete Kernoghan joined completing the lineup. While the band was travelling on a missions trip to Pattaya, Thailand, the poor conditions of said city became the inspiration for their hit song, "God of this City". As an independent band, they recorded their debut album, Greater Things, at the Windmill Lane Studios (U2's preferred studio). The record was eventually released in September 2007, but on January 24, 2008, their album was picked up by Fierce! Records for UK Distribution. The album has now had a name changed and been released in America under the name of "God of This City". In May 2009 the band launch their charity "Stand Out International" It's a charity that directly rescues kids out out of the sex industry.
Highlights off the album "Greater Thing/God of This City" include the superb opener 'Life's Noise', the fresh arrangement of the old hymn 'When I Survey' and the intensity of 'God Of This City'. The combination of Aaron Boyd's voice, Rick Bleakley's edgy guitar and Paul Mills' inventive production gives this a sweeping anthemic sound. Recorded at Dublin's Windmill, U2's favourite studio, their original blend of rock and worship has a creative sound and a spiritual impact making this a stunning debut.
