Nigerian-Born Musician Chukwuemeka Releases Sophomore Album 'His Yoke My Rest'
Accomplished gospel musician, songwriter, and producer Chukwuemeka (Joseph Anyaegbunam) has released his sophomore album, "His Yoke My Rest" in November 2024. The 10-track collection explores themes of divine rest, trust, and humanity's relationship with God, inspired by Matthew 11:28-30.
Following his 2017 debut Keep Hope Alive, this new release represents Chukwuemeka's artistic growth and his journey from Nigeria to establishing himself in the UK music scene after completing his MSc in Information Technology with distinction at the Robert Gordon University.
"This album has been a long time coming," says Chukwuemeka. "I never set out to make an album around the theme of rest, but looking back, I see how intentional God was in weaving it together."
The album invites listeners into a place of rest in God’s love. Chukwuemeka’s unique sound fuses contemporary gospel, soulful harmonies, and diverse musical influences, creating an immersive worship experience.
Standout tracks include:
- "Keep me Lord": A stripped-down, piano-and-cello piece featuring Sinmidele’s warm, soulful vocals. Here the heart reaffirms its choice of God, and total reliance on God's protection. The piano was performed by US-based jazz musician Digba Ogunbiyi, adding depth to the song.
- "All My Praise": An ambient, guitar-driven composition that builds toward a powerful choral declaration, produced by Nkemjika. It reflects on the Majesty and Sovereignty of God, emphasizing how He continuously gives life through His word and works.
- "Rain is Coming": A dynamic, hip-hop-infused song produced by French producer Thomas Stenoff, featuring rap artist Bardkay, celebrating the certainty of fruitfulness despite life’s uncertainties.
- "Broken": A call to action wrapped in rich vocal harmonies and a stirring chant, encouraging listeners to bring love and healing to the world.
Other favorites among listeners include Hold On, Come Within, Love Fills me, and Great & Mighty Father.
The production process spanned continents, with recording sessions in Nigeria, France, the US, and the UK, creating a unique soundscape that blends gospel, jazz, and classical influences into a cohesive musical journey. The album reflects his vision to "illuminate the hearts of men with the love of God" through music that transcends geographical boundaries.
Chukwuemeka has previously performed at major Christian music events including Unusual Praise in Lagos, one of Nigeria's largest Christian worship concerts, and is now actively involved in Aberdeen's music community. He serves as a pianist at St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Peter's Church while participating in the local open mic scene.
"I hope this album will bless every listener's heart with a message God wants to communicate to it," Chukwuemeka adds. "This album has been a journey of faith, and I pray it brings every listener into the peace and rest God desires for them."
His Yoke My Rest is available on all major streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and more.
