If you love reminiscing about the old days, then this album is for you. Amy Grant takes us on a winter wonderland journey of Christmas, Tennessee style. Amy’s voice is as good as it was back in the day, still rich and warm; a country and western sound, with hints of Shania Twain.

“Tennessee Christmas” and “To Be Together” are both classic country style songs, with strummed guitars and keyboards alongside her voice. “Tennessee Christmas” and “To Be Together” are both classic country style songs, with strummed guitars and keyboards alongside her voice. I also detected a hint of piano accordion, which was played beautifully, giving a lovely supporting sound. Lyrics about children, the rush of getting together at Christmas and the love of God and family flow though these songs and my favourite line “There’s chaos in the car seats…” is so true.

“Christmas for You and Me”, “White Christmas” “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm” “Baby It’s Cold Outside” and “Still Can’t Sleep” are jaunty little jazz numbers, telling stories with the classic Christmas themes of little sleep, presents, gingerbread, mistletoe and togetherness running through, perfect for putting us all in the Christmas mood. There are other voices on this album that bring some beautiful harmonies too.

The theme of being together and loving Christmas day is an ideal I think we all aspire to…the reality of it isn’t always so quaint and there are some songs on here that reflect this.

“Melancholy Christmas” and “Another Merry Christmas” sums up the day for those who are alone, or that have lost loved ones and those struggling with life. It brings a sadness to the album but I think it deserves a place here…most Christmas songs are sugar-coated and it’s important to think of those that are not able to celebrate Christmas. Amy is right, Christmas is “Happy and sad” and not just to those who are struggling; I find a tear comes to my eye at Christmas time, knowing that the babe in the manger went through hell for me.

The final song “Oh Come All Ye Faithful”, dedicated to her father, ends the album with the reverence that the babe in the manger deserves.

These songs would be a great backdrop for any family get together at this, the most wonderful time of the year.
