Johnny Burroughs Releasing Debut Solo Album 'Day 1'

May 20 2019

Johnny Burroughs releases his debut album 'DAY 1' on May 24th. The red-headed, preacher’s son seems an unlikely person to create gospel and r&b music. Having grown up playing contemporary worship music, Johnny Burroughs follows in the footsteps of legends like Sam Cooke, and Aretha Franklin, taking a step outside the walls of the contemporary church to expand the sound of gospel music into unexpected realms. Inside of the album he mixes all of his childhood influences, from 70’s soul/funk to 90’s hip hop, and his penchant for groove and open ended arrangements gives room for, what those in the church call, “the move of the spirit.”

With the release of his debut album, Johnny Burroughs carves a distinct and original path in gospel music. DAY 1 was recorded at Mighty Fine studios in Denver, Colorado with award winning engineer Colin Bricker (DeVotchKa, Itchy- O), mastered by award winning engineer Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, Katy Perry) and was written and produced entirely by Burroughs. The album combines classic gospel feels with modern hip hop and R&B production, and mixes influences from “Anderson Paak” to “The Beach Boys.”

The lyrical content presents images of a large cosmic God, juxtaposed with an intimate and loving one. In DAY 1, with it’s soaring gospel choirs, musical expansiveness and honest lyrics, Johnny Burroughs creates a bold introduction to who he is as an artist and makes his presence in music known.

Johnny Burroughs is already the lead singer and chief creative force in the high energy soul band "The Burroughs", but DAY 1 marks his first foray as a solo artist. DAY 1 will be released worldwide May 24th.
