This is a very much Jesus Culture sounding release, you kind of know what you are going to get, but the album really does strip things back, the album is a much cleaner sound that on previous Jesus Culture releases. The band in their press release say "Church Volume One (Live) returns to who Jesus Culture was from the start; a family with a collection of songs that reflect who God is and what He is doing in their church and their lives. They captured lyrics and melodies that carry a new sound for a new season". And lyrically this feels like these songs are very much about the church, their local church at this time, you could even say these songs feel more personal.

As with all Jesus Culture releases you do get a sense of excitement, a sense of poured out passion, in the recordings and a sense of love and adoration to God. Jesus Culture have always managed to capture this well in recordings, yet this releases has a mature honesty to it, there aren't many Christian phrasing soundbite moments on the album, these are song that are personal to the songwriters and their personal daily walk with God in their own church environment.

As always with Jesus Culture, most songs are over the 6 minute mark, which I know for some people is perfect and for some people they feel a song can drag. I have many people say this to me over the years and I have come to a conclusion, if the song is good, you don't mind how long it goes on. With songs like these from Jesus Culture you need to be in that frame of worship, you can't half heartedly come to songs by Jesus Culture, these are not 3 minute pop songs to tickle your fancy, these are songs that are given space to explore and give the listeners space to worship and speak to God in their own time. That's what Jesus Culture do so well and this album Church is a really great first part to what will be a great collection of songs when part 2 makes an appearance.
