Voces8 are an award winning acapella octet based in the UK. They were formed in 2005 and have recorded 4 CDs including this new album 'Evensong'. Their previous releases were From Gibbons to Gershwin (2007); Blessings (2006); and Snowed In (2006). Their website describes the kind of music they play as "ranging from early English and European Renaissance choral work, such as Orlando Gibbons to their own arrangements of jazz and pop songs". This might not be your cup of tea already, but you might be surprised. Voces8 have won many awards including Best Act at the challenging International Choral...

Their website describes the kind of music they play as "ranging from early English and European Renaissance choral work, such as Orlando Gibbons to their own arrangements of jazz and pop songs". This might not be your cup of tea already, but you might be surprised. Voces8 have won many awards including Best Act at the challenging International Choral Competition in Gorizia, Italy in 2005 and in 2006 Voces8 won two first prizes at the international choral competition in Tolosa, Spain. All very impressive. This band has toured all over the world from the USA to Kenya to China to Germany and France.
The album starts off with title track "Evensong", and has a lot of vocal bass work which is very creative; I have to admit from the start this really isn't the kind of album I would normally have ever got into. Next up is the classic "Me & My Shadow" which is a great song in itself, and with no band to backup the vocals they don't do a bad version of it at all. The album goes through much of the same using the 8 band members vocal quality's to create a band sound, all very clever and recorded with such quality that the crisp fullness of the vocals makes the album. The band members have worked hard to create this sound for this album and I applaud them for that. The album does have a very 1950's feel to it in places though.
Let's just say I wouldn't buy this album, I have to be honest or these reviews would be pointless. Voces8 are 8 great people who can sing and are very creative, but sadly not for young people into guitar music or dance music or anything that is in the charts today. This album would be the perfect album to give to your Grandparents for Christmas. Voces8, keep doing what you are doing, I want to say this review doesn't mean it's a bad album, it's just not for me.
