Picture the scene: It's a crisp, sunny Sunday morning. You're in a log cabin in the middle of some beautiful countryside with windows all around you so you can enjoy the view. That is the perfect time for you to pick up Marie Barnett's 'Heaven Came Down'.
Unfortunately, for the majority of us the majority of the time this is just a scene that we would act out in our imagination and not the way we spend our time in the real world so I can't help but wonder how much playing time this album would actually get.
Now, don't get me wrong, this is a pleasant album but the unfortunate thing is that that's as far as it goes. That's not to say it's a wholly bad record, there are definite pluses for it such as the passion behind the vocals, the raw edge it carries off to perfectly convey that passion at times mixed with some beautifully crafted lyrics and cool melodies, but it just never seemed to be enough for me.
There are nice guitar moments and a great stripped down drum section in Jesus Name which grabbed my attention but that, for me, was the standout moment of this album.
Maybe I am being too harsh after being truly disappointed with the intro to the first song where the rawness is taken just that little bit too far and leave it sounding like a demo rather than a polished song. Maybe that lead me to listen to the album with a negative ear. But I am really not convinced about this one. Perhaps it a grower...
