In late 2008 yFriday released a news update about their Prelude Tour, their live CD/DVD had captured everything that they had been as a band upto this point, however they felt that God was leading them in a different direction into 2009. Great & Glorious, yFriday's fifth studio album, is written focused on this new direction; firmly into worship.
Over the course of previous albums Ken Riley has been the sole author of the music, with the exception of Everlasting God; co-written with Brenton Brown, Great & Glorious has a mix of tracks, some being written by Riley, whilst others being co-written by people such as Tim Hughes, Matt Redman and Delirious' Martin Smith. Having this mix of authorship gives individual tracks a really different feel and creates a diversity on the album, yet staying true to the completeness of the album as tracks fit well next to each other.
Another key part of the album is the resources that it includes, one of the hopes of the band is that the music will be used for worship within churches, so alongside the lyrics being included, guitar chords are included within the cover booklet. In addition to this a DVD is included showing Ken Riley going through each track, teaching how to play each track, but also showing what that track is about.
