I first came to know about Paul Bell when I heard Name In Lights back in early 2010. I was instantly drawn in by his soft and rich vocals and clever acoustic guitar work. But what also drew me into enjoying the music of Paul Bell was the fact that this guy could write great songs that had clever and intriguing stories in them, and also could be very tongue in cheek and funny with his lyrics. But what also drew me into enjoying the music of Paul Bell was the fact that this guy could write great songs that had clever and intriguing stories in them, and also could be very tongue in cheek and funny with his lyrics. Songs like Thursday Night, What I Call Romance and The Need For Biscuits are still a joy to listen to. Yet now with a new collection of songs from an album named While We Sleep Tonight Paul is back, and better than ever.
With a bigger, fuller, acoustic guitar sound than the last album, the opening four tracks 'What You're Gonna Do Today', 'Coming Up' 'Blazing Clouds' and 'Making Good' all do what Paul does best. Paul's style of music fits with musicians like James Blunt and David Gray, but the thing I enjoy most about this album is the tone of Paul's voice. This is a guy who just sings and seems like he isn't trying too hard to create the warmness in his expression.
We then move on to They Go Together which takes the album to another level with its soft 60's swing style. This songs isn't to be taken too seriously, with lyrics dealing with stuff that simply go together. "They're like Richard and Judy, Prince Phillip and the Queen.... They go together, they go together... they're like body odor and poor standard of personal hygiene one follows the other". Of course this shows that Paul knows how to put the most random of words into a catchy song!
If you enjoyed the last album from Paul, you will love this album too, with great guitar playing, great songs, interesting lyrics and a man who enjoys writing creative chord structures in his songs. Just listen to the amazing Dreams of Home and you can hear Paul using some really interesting chords, ensuring things don't just sound the same throughout. Then the song Love speaks of one of the most written about subjects ever yet this is one song that is really moving, a real stunning moment on the album.
Some people reading this might not know much about Paul and his music, but can I be the one to introduce you to this man who knows how to put a great song together. Too Much Difference and While We Sleep Tonight are two very different styles of songs but all done on the acoustic guitar by the same songwriter and that shows the diverse talents of this man.
