Canadian singer/songwriter Paul Woida (pronounced Woy-duh) has released a single called 'All The Lights'. When you start listening to this track you may think there's quite an extended intro. And there's a very good reason for that. When you start listening to this track you may think there's quite an extended intro. And there's a very good reason for that. Paul describes himself as a "Master Looper", and to really understand what that means, and indeed the mechanics behind this track, you really need to watch the YouTube music video that accompanies the song.

If you're familiar with Ed Sheeran (and let's face it, unless you've been stuck in an underground bunker for the past decade, you've most likely heard of him) then you've already heard a Master Looper at work, whether you realise it or not. Now, I'm no musician, but my simple explanation of what that term means is this: A musician records themself playing a short piece of music on their guitar / keyboard / percussion, or short burst of vocals, and then uses clever computer equipment to play that back on a loop. They then repeat that process, recording and playing back a different piece of music, beats or vocals, adding each loop into the mix so that they combine in a series of layers to produce a fully fledged sound. Again, you really need to watch the video, because it's fascinating to watch Paul gradually build up the song.

So the reason the intro to this single is so long is because first Paul plays a few simple notes on his electric guitar, then switches to his keyboards (in fact he has 3 different keyboards in the video) and plays a few more notes, by the time he's recorded about 5 different loops on the synths and guitar, he's ready to take a seat at an electric drum kit and add the beats into the mix. Finally, about 90 seconds in, he starts to add his vocals to the song. If you just listen to this on Spotify, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Paul has an entire band backing him as he sings. But this is the modern day equivalent of the one-man-band that used to entertain crowds.

Paul really does get everything right on this track. The fantastic riffs and loops all combine to produce an incredibly full sound, it's catchy and infectious, and the beat really makes you nod your head as you enjoy his soft vocals. He has a great range, adding highs and lows with his voice, all the while adding in little bursts of instruments and vocals. It's a four and a half minute masterpiece that will leave you delving into his back-catalogue to see what else this talented musician and vocalist has got.
