Emery were formed in 2001 in Rock Hill, South Carolina but moved as a band to Seattle to find a better musical environment. The band are Toby Morrell (vocals), Devin Shelton (vocals, bass, guitar) Matt Carter (guitar, vocals) Josh Head (keyboards, screaming vocals, electronics) Dave Powell (drums). All of the members in Emery are Christians, but the band is reluctant to be labeled a Christian rock band. Although the band has a Christian outlook and mission, their concern is that being labeled as "Christian" will hinder their ability to reach their audience.

"In The Shallow Seas We Sail" is the 5th album from the band via their record label "Tooth & Nail Records". The album was produced and recorded by Aaron Sprinkle and Matt Carter at "The Compound" and "Tigertown Studios".
"In The Shallow Seas We Sail" is 14 tracks long and each track has hardcore guitar rifts with in-your-face screaming vocals. I have to admit this isn't my cup of tea, screaming vocals and overtly heavy guitars are a bit too much for me (that makes me sound old). But this is a massive market in America, and millions of people enjoy heavy music, so for them this album will, I think, be brilliant. The one big issue I had with this album was some of the track names were a bit interesting to say the least, especially "Churches and Serial Killers". I have read the lyrics online to try and make sense of the song, but sadly still don't fully understand them.
Emery do a great job at making an album that people who like music a bit heavier will enjoy. From this you can see why the band get asked to play a lot of club gigs, and that's brilliant taking the Christian message to those place that wouldn't normally hear about Jesus.
Is this the album for me? No, we all have different tastes and this album will not be on my iPod on shuffle. Is "In the Shallow Seas We Sail" a good album? Yes, if heavy hardcore rock music with screaming vocals is what you enjoy!
