Reading through the track listing of this album, I was imagining a female version of Jars of Clay’s Redemption Songs and I wasn’t far off.
The whole album has that atmospheric Church feel mixed with the tension of these old hymns being dragged into the twenty-first century.

The first few tracks didn’t grab me, if I’m completely honest. They are full of atmosphere and that Church feel that works beautifully within the four walls of a Church, but not so well on the old MP3 player. Having listened to the whole album I think the problem is the ordering of the tracks more than the tracks themselves. To start the album off with three slow, atmospheric songs probably wasn’t the best idea.
Things start getting more upbeat with There Is A Fountain and by Nothing But The Blood I was definitely back on board with this album. But then the track listing issue comes back - Track 6 is Nothing But The Blood, Track 9 is Nothing But The Blood (Light) which is a stripped down, more acoustic feeling version of the same song. Now, the guitars come in beautifully and it’s a great version but two tracks after the first version? I just don’t understand.
Aside from the bizarre track ordering, Leah's voice is beautifully pure and strong throughout delivering the prayerful lyrics of each track perfectly. In my opinion, there are some unwise musical elements and pairings on a few of the tracks but there are some great tracks on the album that would sit perfectly within the Church however, I am still unsure of their standing outside of that setting.
If you are looking for old hymns done in a new way, this is a great album to look to.
