"As I listen back over the record, I find common themes in every song of our purpose as a band, to try and encourage people to live out their faith through a life of real love for others" that’s what lead singer Seth Mosley from Me In Motion said about their self titled debut album. Me In Motion are a band that have already grown a large live following around America having already performed 150 gigs in 2009, last year being the opening act on the latest Newsboys tour. The band over the last few years have gained a big live reputation that has got people talking about them. Now it’s time for the three piece to take centre stage with the release of their first album.
I am always impressed with three piece rock bands that can seem to create a towering barrage of sound from only a few instruments, this is what Me In Motion do, and they do it very well. The album was produced by Ian Eskelin and he and Seth have managed to recreate their full live sound on this album.
For all who don’t know, Me In Motion are Seth Mosley on vocals and guitars, Tim Wilson on bass and vocals and Brian Dexter on drums and vocals. Mosley and co have been around since 2006, playing as many live gig as they could fit into a year, yet it’s not until now they have had the opportunity to release their first album.
Losers kicks off this album with a fast paced high impact track that grabs your attention from the word go, with positive, inspiring lyrics of “Jesus has a thing for losers” this track has a hint of Dc Talk’s classic Jesus Freak. I have had Losers on repeat on my ipod since I had the opportunity to download it as a single a few months before the album was released and it become a favorite of mine very quickly.
Gotta Be Something has a funky yet rock groove, discussing the drive that people have to be someone or something in today’s world. We are always trying and striving to impress people, but we don’t have to do this when we know we are already somebody as one of God’s children. Leaving Here Someday has a similar groove, I might even say a pop feel, but don’t let that put you off this breathtaking track.
Me In Motion are a hard hitting rock band with great guitar sounds, blunt yet truthful lyrics and immense bass and drums. The classic rock sound comes through in the track You Never Fail Me which reminds me of tracks written by one of the best bands ever, The Who. It would be easy for me to describe the sound and style of this album as at times sounding distinctly Brit Rock but after reading some of their influences on their website I can now fully understand the sound this band have created. A large majority of their influences are from the British Isles, and these have shaped the sound of Me In Motion, yet on the same side of the coin, this band do have their own sound.
Seek Justice, Love Mercy takes the fast paced energy down a few notches from the previous tracks, yet the lyrics are as hard hitting as the high energy start of the album. The song talks about seeking justice in the world, and showing love to our neighbours without living selfishly.
The album ends with acoustic track You Move Me which seems to be the perfect way to end this album, a sing-out-loud chorus to keep on ringing in your ears after the album has finished playing on your music player.
This self titled album has everything, hard hitting rock, positive uplifting lyrics and even sometimes a little bit of rock n' roll groove. Could this be the near perfect album? I’ll let you make your own mind up about that, maybe a bit short at only 10 tracks, but definitely worth checking out. Frontman Seth says "I always find myself going back to the theme of wanting to make a difference, to live out our faith, even when it might be the hardest thing in the world to do. My heart for myself, the band, the kids and families that hear Me In Motion's music is that all of us will be inspired to break out of these little bubbles that we so often find ourselves retreating into and to show everybody a little bit of Jesus' love every day". Thankfully that's what this wonderful album does, and it does it very well.
