Rock band Stryper have released their eighth studio album, No Hell To Pay. Formed in 1983 as Roxx Regime, the band soon changed their musical message to reflect their Christian beliefs and the band's name was also changed to Stryper. They went on to become the first overtly Christian heavy metal band to gain acceptance in the mainstream.
In a way this new album is very similar to what you would expect from Stryper. The band produce good quality music in a style their fans will love, and they do it well. In a way this new album is very similar to what you would expect from Stryper. The band produce good quality music in a style their fans will love, and they do it well. They know how to produce massive sounding power ballads and opening track Revelation is just that - a pure power ballad with some real swagger.
But it's in tracks like 80s rock inspired Water Into Wine and Jesus Is Just Alright that we see Stryper take inspiration in the style of songs from their previous years.
This band isn't just a throw back kind of band. Stryper are a band who know how to rock. In classic rock title track No More Hell To Pay the quality sounds epic with guitars ringing out loud and clear.
Other plus points on the album are tracks like Legacy and The One which sound like they fell out of the early Manic Street Preachers back catalogs. The latter song soon became a favorite of mine.
Saved By Love has some great harmonies mixed with some very energetic drums and Te Amo is a pounding, driven song with a great chorus that is well worth having a listen to if you're into heavy metal music.
Stryper isn't for everyone, but this band have been around so long you might have worked that out by now. You can't get away from the skillfulness of this band who keep producing quality songs and quality albums. This new album has some of the bands best songs to date and will fit in a live gig setting very easily. Stryper have done themselves proud again.
