Ben Cantelon, for those who don't know him, is formerly a worship leader at Soul Survivor Church in Watford and now works at Holy Trinity Brompton alongside Tim Hughes and Al Gordon. In the last few years Ben has written a number of great worship songs such as 'Love came down' 'Celebrate' 'You are' and 'Be high and lifted up'. His first album, 'Daylight Breaks Through' although at times lacking in the quality of the recording, was nevertheless packed with high quality songs that led you into worship. Read More Ben Cantelon, for those who don't know him, is formerly a worship leader at Soul Survivor Church in Watford and now works at Holy Trinity Brompton alongside Tim Hughes and Al Gordon. So when hearing of the pending release of his second album I was very enthusiastic.
The sound quality of Ben's latest release is much improved from his first album, and helps create an atmosphere of worship throughout the album, although I believe there was more that could have been done and the sound was, at time, quite hollow. Saying that, the simplicity of Ben's songs lends itself to be used in a church service far more easily than the songs of other artists. There are a number of songs on the album that I feel in love with straight away. 'Be high and lifted up', Coming Back have to be amongst my favourite songs on the album and are ideal for use in worship with only a few musicians.
So this album is looking very positive so far. Don't get me wrong, this is a very good album - I found it hard to find many songs that I didn't like (and I'm normally quite picky when it comes to worship songs) but after listening to the album there were two questions in my mind. After listening to the album a few more times these questions are still there. Now feel free to disagree with me but here they are: Firstly (and this may just be me being picky) but I found myself thinking on a number of occasions "I recognise that line or that melody, or that cord pattern from somewhere else". Now I'm not for a second accusing Ben Cantelon of plagiarism. What I am saying is that perhaps some of the songs where rushed a bit and that the originality of the majority of songs on the album is let down by a few lines that may not have had the full attention they deserved. Secondly (and again this is probably me being fussy) the focus of the worship stays pretty much constant throughout the album. Yes I know it's about God and worship should always be focussed on God, but I wanted to be drawn to the cross, or to creation, or the astonishing love He has for us. As my English teacher always used to tell me when I wrote any descriptive piece of writing "Don't tell me - show me". I don't just want to be told that God is great and awesome - I want to be shown it in the detail of His word, His actions, His creation and His love.
To conclude, I would highly recommend this album. I feel I have been quite harsh on poor Ben, and perhaps haven't expanded enough on the many positives that come from this album. I look forward to using many of these songs in worship in my local church.
