Chris McClarney the American Worship leader has just released his new album 'Introducing Chris McClarney' which as it says on the tin is a introduction to the man himself. I have to admit I don't know much about Chris but was told he wrote the very well know song 'Your Love Never Fails'.

With every new release we get a little press release to promote the artist and with this album the press release told me "Every once in a while something different happens, something that makes you pause, reflect and reassess. Chris McClarney is that 'different thing'. Unassuming, yet possessing a voice that could stop traffic." Now being the man I am, I had to try and see if Mr McClarney voice could stop traffic, so off I went with my Boom Box and his latest album and stood in the middle of the busiest street in Cardiff.
My results were incredible. His voice didn't stop traffic, I nearly got run over twice and had a lot of abuse from car drivers along the lines of "Get off the road, you idiot." After all of this, I felt I should head home and review the album.
The EP starts with "Your Love Never Fails" which starts very much like a The Police ballad or a Sting solo hit and basically that's all you get, a middle of the road American singer song which leads to "Still Saving Me" which is of the same style and feel to the first track, but has a mid 90's Savage Garden ballad sound. "Defender" has a more soulful feel and this is the first track that really let the amazing vocals of Chris come through and if anything had a more modern ballad feel. The lyrics of "Your Love Is Everything" are about the trust of God's love and are by far the best lyrics off the album. "Across The Universe" takes the album up a notch, this really should have been the first track on the album, and has promise of what could be a great track. Sadly the album takes a whimper again with "Blessed Assurance", which has so much promise but lacks creativity.
While listening to this album for about the fifth time on the way to work, I bumped into an old friend, I took my headphones out and had a wonderful chat with them. It was great to catch up, what I had not realized was that my music player was still playing. After saying goodbye to my old friend we went our separate ways, I replaced the headphones into my small ears to start listening to the album. What I hadn't realized was that the album had moved onto a new track until I checked my music player for the name of the track. The songs were very similar in style, tempo and melody. This doesn't bid well for the album in my opinion.
This album bored me, it had no real exciting moments, the songs seemed to blend into one another and after putting the album down I wasn't humming the songs. Saying all that, Chris does have an amazing voice, it's just that all his songs sound like songs we have heard a million time from other American male singers.
