Some people would call my musical taste 'eclectic', most just think it's weird. My mp3 playlists will happily go from Metallica and Nickelback to Britney Spears and The Dixie Chicks to Delirious? and Christy Nockels. The title track of Oh Sleeper's new album opens with screaming vocals backed by screaming guitar riffs that for me defines this genre, which I was interested to find out was named 'metalcore'.

This type of music is a bit hit and miss for me; I'm not a huge fan but there are bands of this genre that I do like and strong songs of other artists which I like, so I wasn't totally put off by the Son Of Morning. I was, however, a bit more comfortable as the second track comes in with more of a Linkin Park type sound, soft vocal tunes contrasting the guitar and screaming vocals.
A few years back in the early 2000s when Evanescence first came out, there was a trend of movies coming out accompanied by hard rocking soundtracks by Wind-Up records. Any of the 10 tracks from this album could seamlessly fit into one of those albums.
I can understand a lot of people being turned off by this album because of the shouty vocals or hard guitar riffs, but there are some beautiful melodies on this album and, if you can get past the aggressive sound of some of the vocals, there are equally beautiful lyrics.
It would be a shame to pass the album off on the basis of the first track and perhaps it was a mistake to not start the album off on a lighter note. Having said that, this is the bands second album so they may be playing on the fact that people know their earlier material and don't want to play it safe. Either way, this album is worth a listen, just make sure that listen lasts longer than the first track!
