Thousands of people go to the Soul Survivor event each summer and come back with a fresh batch of worship songs ready to use within their local church. "Over the last 20 years we have been humbled and awed at all that we have seen God do as we have met together at our Soul Survivor events", says Soul Survivor co-founder Mike Pilavach.
"Some of the most special times have been when thousands of us have gathered for worship in our main meetings. We've loved having a variety of worship-leading friends join us over the years to help us explore different musical styles, but our worship has never been about the pursuit of musical excellence.
Our longing has always been to touch God's heart and as we’ve offered him our praise he has taken us on an incredible journey. Our prayer is that this collection of songs helps you to draw close to the Saviour that you might know more of his life-changing presence."
Those moments of getting closer to the heart of God through prayer and music will always be close to my heart too. It was during those times as a young teen, standing shoulder to shoulder with other people who cared about the true living God, that I think I learnt what worshipping God really meant.
So, it's been twenty years of this amazing event and now they have released a greatest hits of the best 30 songs over those years. Where do you start with an album like this? There are so many songs on this album that are just amazing to listen to.
From the opening riff of the pounding We are The Free to the moving Facedown which still brings me to my knees when I hear it. Each song talks about a different aspect of God and His mercy, grace and love.
The album features 30 tracks including best loved anthems from across the years, ranging from 'See His Love' and 'You're Beautiful' to modern day classic like Build Your Kingdom Here. Also featured on the album are worship leaders that include Matt Redman, Tim Hughes, Ben Cantelon, Martyn Layzell and Beth Croft, plus worship bands Delirious and Rend Collective Experiment each adding their own unique worship leading style.
From a personal point, I can still remember the moment I heard Tim Hughes lead the song We Must Go for the very first time at the event. I remember standing there with thousands of other young people realizing together that worship and justice should go hand in hand. It seemed during those moments that we all captured the heart to go out and serve the community through social action events like 'Hope'. "We must go, live to feed the hungry, stand behind the broken, we must go. Stepping forward, keep us from just singing, move us into action, we must go". Hearing the words again has moved me to think how I can personally do this for God.
This album is jam packed full of songs that were used in times of worship while I went to the event over the 20 years, and this has really brought back some great memories of exploring God's love. This album isn't just a memory filling greatest hits. This album is full of great timeless worship songs. I love fresh new sounds of worship and I can't wait to hear what songs come out of this years event, but as a collection of songs then this album is one of the best.
