Kutless were formed 9 years ago as a worship band named Call Box, but changed their name to Kutless in 2002 and have always been seen as the heavy rock band of the Christian music world. The band have released what seems to be their softest album yet, with this offering taking on a more traditional worship band style and sound. To date the bands most popular release is their first worship album Strong Tower which gained large success in America and now the Portland boys are back with their new worship album It is Well.

The band have released what seems to be their softest album yet, with this offering taking on a more traditional worship band style and sound. To date the bands most popular release is their first worship album Strong Tower which gained large success in America and now the Portland boys are back with their new worship album It is Well.
The albums starts with title track It Is Well, which took me by surprise as it begins with the ringing of a town hall clock and in the background the faint sound of a choir singing the classic hymn It Is Well. Then, at around the one minute mark, the song takes a more modern turn with a large amount of guitar dampening. I wasn't expecting to enjoy a heavier version of this classic hymn, and the pureists will not, but I have to say I was impressed; a good surprise to start that way. The album seems to have some wonderful covers which Kutless add their own style to, with very good versions of Hungry and God of Wonders, versions which, in my opinion, are much more powerful and hard hitting than the originals.
But the two hidden gems on this album are the two written by the band. The last track, I'm Still Yours is on the edge of a beautiful acoustic ballad declaring ones love for God during everything, with lyrics of "If I lost it all, will my hands stay lifted, to the God who gives and takes away... still my heart will sing to you." The other sparkling diamond of this 12 track album is Everything I Need which is another song declaring the wonder of God and simply that He is everything we need.
I have to say I am more impressed with this album than I thought I might be; never judge a book by its cover! I'm sure all Kutless fans will love this album, especially if they enjoyed the first worship album Strong Tower. On the other hand I bet there are a few fans wanting them to go down the alternative route again, but look at it on a positive note, not many bands can do worship and alternative rock so well.
