A Hope For Home are a heavy rock band - you know, the kind of band that scream down the mic and the kind of band you wouldn't let your mother listen to. They now return, for the third time in four years with Facedown, to bring us their latest effort, In Abstraction. I have to admit that aggressive vocals and hard heavy metal bands have never really been my cup of tea, even if I do totally appreciate their musicianship. I have to admit that aggressive vocals and hard heavy metal bands have never really been my cup of tea, even if I do totally appreciate their musicianship. But actually there is a slow tempo to the music on this album.
Calm is a very gentle start in comparison to what I was expecting. Even though the screaming, hard hitting vocals were ringing out there was a sadness within the music. The same can be said about second track Out of Ruin, Misery, there is a haunting beauty to this track and it's actually a really nice song.
As the album is only 7 tracks long you might not expect much in length of the album, but that is where you are wrong. The shortest song on the album is The House Where You Were Born which comes in at 5:16 and then the longest of the album is final track Everything That Rises Must Converge at over 9 and half minutes, and it's my favorite of the album due to it's creativity yet at the same time being in your face and for me the song with a little bit more about it.
When I first hit the play button on this album I kind of made my mind up a little that I might not like it as a whole, but even so there is a beauty in this album that can be heard throughout. Could it be that within heavy metal, and the screaming heartfelt vocals on this album, is a songwriter and a band showing such beautiful pieces of music for people to get their teeth into? Yes! So actually, take time to pay attention to this album, it really might surprise you, no matter what your genre of choice.
