"I, I am right where I belong, don't have a place to call my own, cause with you I'm right where I belong" are the lyrics to the opening track 'Where I Belong'. Looking at the lyrics at first glance you could think it's attributed to a wife/husband or a boyfriend/girlfriend. Yet there is more to this singer that just fluffy happy lyrics, the song is about being close to God and how at no cost we can be safe with Him. Many mainstream singers sing lyrics about being close to their one true love, but from the off Jenny wants to tell the world she is safe in the arms of the one true God.
As a whole album, musically this does have a similar feel to the sounds that a lot of American female singers have been producing on their albums these last few years. I suppose I could compare the sound of the album to that of singers like Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and many others. Call it pop/rock or even middle of the road soft-pop/rock. This is a genre of music that doesn't offend, and is loved by the many people who purchase it.
So what does Jenny Simmonds have that stands out from other similar artists? Well, lyrically she always looks at the positive side of life. She doesn't sing songs that deal with dramas of break ups, make ups, and everything else around that line. She sings lyrics that are true to her life, and at the heart of that is God, so God features in the centre of all the songs.
I loved listening to many of the songs on this album, even if the album wasn't directly recorded for my demographic. The song This I Know is a very happy Jack Johnson-esq ditty number and left me with a little smile as it has that happy feeling to it. Broken Hallelujah shows a very mature side to Jenny's songwriting. She writes "Find me on my knees, with nothing left to hide, I'll be by the river, leaving all my shame behind", a really strong song on the album.
The album mixes together the happy go lucky pop songs, with a few acoustic ballads like The Becoming and Don't Loose Heart. I can really see people liking this album. Simple and honest songs, especially Don't Loose Heart which for me personally is the best song of the album, lyrically very positive yet with a darker melody that really adds a creative side to the songs. Jenny's first solo album shows so much promise, and is a truly good effort.
