Interview: Belinda Song

Apr 07 2022

Belinda Song is many things. An American singer-songwriter, music producer and published author among them. She has just released her latest single 'Worthy 4.4' and Louder Than The Music chatted with her to find out what inspires her to make music, and her plans for the future.

For those who haven't heard of you before, can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got involved in making music?

I'm an American singer/songwriter and music producer, an entrepreneur as well as creative artist. Love to build businesses and assist my clients to reach their goals, while pursuing my own passion in art. I've written romance novels, produced and starred in independent films, but my ultimate passion is music. I received classical training at seven years old and was scouted by Polydor Records (Asia.) My debut releases were two original soundtracks for the movie 'Seasons Of Love.' When Polygram/Polydor merged with Universal Music Group, my compositions and albums were transferred to UMG (HK) - and were remastered and released through various complication albums with UMG. Currently, I am producing and releasing my original compositions independently with my own record label.

Tell us about your new single 'Worthy 4.4' and what the inspiration behind it was?

Where there is love, there is also hate. According to my observation and understanding, hatred is quite often triggered by jealousy and lack of tolerance. Few of my good friends have been impacted by bullies and people who are unkind in general. I am not exempted from unkind people either, and have received a fair share of harassment caused by stalkers and cyber bullies. Long story short, I am blessed with a strong character and am a warrior. My song 'Worthy 4.4' was written in a time of change, many were impacted by the pandemic, and many others were affected by harassment of some kind. The motivational and uplifting lyrics are from my heart, and extends to everyone seeking hope, courage and strength to continue on.

Do you have any plans to release more music in the near future?

Yes, currently working on an extremely special single "Rock The World XX", a collaboration with an artist who is near and dear to my heart, and chances are, fans of 80s music will know him too. Too early to announce the details, but this single will be released in June. Thereafter an electronic dance album "Just Dance" will be released in October to welcome in the Holiday Season 2022.

What message would you like people to take from your music?

Believe in yourself and NEVER GIVE UP!

How would you describe your style of music and what are your influences?

Currently my main genres are electronic pop (electro pop) and alternative rock. Growing up, I listened to Barbra Streisand's impeccable vocals, and I'm also a fan of classic rock bands like Led Zepplin and opera rock singer such as Sarah Brightman. To date, I love the Weeknd and Ed Sheeran.

If you could work with any songwriter, who would it be and why?

I would love to work with Carole King. She is actually my idol, love her music and her talent as a singer/songwriter. Her work stands the test of time and she has written so many hit songs throughout her career, she has my total respect. It would be a dream come true to just meet her!

How would you define success in your career as an artist?

To me, success as a music artist is the ability to touch the listeners' hearts and to create positive influences.

What is your favorite album of all time?

It's a tie between movie soundtrack "Streets Of Fire" - love Dianne Lane, and "Abbey Road" - The Beatles.

You're stuck on an island, it's hot, you only have enough battery life left to listen to one song on your phone. What track is it?

"Calling All Angels" - Train. (heheheheh)

What does the next year hold for you?

Something AMAZING! I'm determined to live each day to the fullest and be the best that I can be!
