Interview: Kingdmusic
South African gospel artist Kingdmusic talks to Louder Than The Music about his powerful new anthem ‘Let It Go’ and his recent album 'Hold On', plus his plans for the future.
For those who haven't heard of you before, can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got involved in making music?
I am from a village called Mukula in Limpopo province, South Africa. I started making music from the age of 14 after realising that I have passion for writing songs and would like to pursue this as a career.
Tell us about your new single 'Let It Go' and what the inspiration behind it was?
The song was written to inspire & encourage people to let go of their worries and focus on God’s promises over their lives.
You've also just released a new album called 'Hold On' - what more can you tell us about that release?
‘Hold On’ is an album for an everyday person who’s trying their best to chase after their dreams with so many challenges pulling them back. It’s an album that lifts someone’s spirits while also bringing them closer to Jesus. I featured 3 time Grammy Nominee Deitrick Haddon on ‘Praises’, American Gospel singer Terrian on ‘Worry About Nothing’ and IMRSQD from Namibia on ‘Probider’. It was an honour to work with these incredible artists.
What message would you like people to take from your music?
Faith, Hope & Love
How would you describe your style of music and what are your influences?
I don’t really have a word to describe it but my music style is always evolving because I make music for everyone. My music is a fusion of CCM worship, Christian Pop, HipHop, Afrobeat, Amapiano, Reggae and Afro-House. I’ve drawn inspiration from artists like Tauren Wells, Toby Mac, Lecrae, for KING & COUNTRY, Brandon Lake & so many other Christian artists & songwriters.
If you could work with any songwriter, who would it be and why?
Am I allowed to mention a few? Benjamin William Hastings, Brandon Lake, Dante Bowe, Brooke Ligertwood, Steven Furtik. I adore all these songwriters and how they seem to know how to communicate God’s heart for the church and how they are able to write different genres.
How would you define success in your career as an artist?
Being able to do what you love and still having so much time to spend with family.
What is your favourite album of all time?
No Other Name by Hillsong
You're stuck on an island, it's hot, you only have enough battery life left to listen to one song on your phone. What track is it?
Dancing with my Shadow by Benjamin William Hastings.
What does the next year hold for you?
I’m looking forward to being in the US for a few live events where I’ll be promoting my album ‘Hold On’. I’m also looking forward to being a part of the Kingdom Tour by Maverick City Music X Kirk Franklin in South Africa. And releasing more music.
