Fugitive Music Give Away 'Songs Of Resistance & Comfort Vol. I'

Jul 09 2015

Fugitive Music have released 'Songs of Resistance & Comfort Vol. I', an album they describe as a different kind of devotional album that wrestles with the connection between worship, justice, and creative expression.

"It's a call to peaceful arms for practitioners of the Politics of Jesus, poured out into the world around them", explains band member Simon Paylor. "It contributes to an emerging Songbook for followers of The Way. But it's also an attempt to ask questions and start a conversation."

"I used to be involved in worship in the church that birthed 24/7 prayer, and at the same time that launched I pulled together an album called 'Biography' (released on Survivor Records at the time). I went on to intentionally 'take it outside' the walls of church, trying to make it in a mainstream band for a few years: an attempt at being involved in and speaking to our culture. In the meantime, I also invested in work I felt was meaningful: mentoring young offenders, teaching music in an asylum detention centre, and eventually running an international development charity (with lots of local friends directly fighting poverty).

The band journey and the work I was doing gave me lots of fresh perspective, and like many people I know (especially creatives and those in 'justice' quarters), I struggled with various expressions of musical worship. It came to a head for me, but the tension and questions came out creatively. The album 'Songs of Resistance & Comfort Vol. I' is my attempt to square the circle of worship, justice and creative expression, and it was funded by people who believed in that voice.

It's pretty eclectic - it is a 'worship' album, but part of the reason I did it was to contribute to a wider dialogue about what we mean by that, and to point to the need to focus on being 'poured out' for the world around us."
