Blog: Helen Sanderson-White: Never think 'nothing' is about to happen!

Jan 19 2016

In the first of our series of guest blogs with artist Helen Sanderson-White, we find out whats been happening in her life over the past year, and her plans for 2016.

What a difference a few weeks make! At the beginning of September, I hadn’t got many plans for 2016 and I was beginning to wonder how the year would pan out. For those of you who know me well, you know how I always have a project on the go. Anyway over the course of the Autumn things have changed drastically…

To start the year off, I’m releasing a new single Close That Door on Friday 22nd January; it’s a song about choosing what we focus on and let into lives. I’m very excited as there’s a brand new video for this song on the way which was filmed in Sheffield and Leicester. The song has a real 60s feel so I wanted the video to reflect this; I even landed up having 60s make up and a beehive! There are lot of photos of this on my Facebook Music page, so do go and have a good nose! In the next few months, I’m hoping to go back on the road to promote the song.

For nine years, I’ve had a dream of setting up a regular concert series which showcases fantastic jazz, folk and singer-songwriters. During the recession it became impossible to set this sort of event up and sadly the dream died… Or so I thought! However in October the idea began to resurface and I contacted a colleague to see if she was interested in setting this up with me. Long story short, it’s happening and I’m very pleased to say that Turntable Music has been born and our first concert is on Friday 11th March 2016. You can find out more details at turntablemusic.co.uk

I'm also working on two new songwriting projects: the first is a new album. It’s been a while since I released a whole album and I really wanted to produce a large volume of music so I knew it was time to get on with that. It’s been great to have plenty of space to really get into topics that interest me and to musically explore; I wanted to start pushing the boundaries with my sound and trying new things. The album is collection of stories about life, people and how we relate to each other.

The second project is an album of folk songs about Buckinghamshire; it’s the county where my children were born and I wanted to record some interesting stories for them about the history of the place where they are from. It’s been great to link with the community; one of the local museums has been really helpful and we’re hoping to do an event together in 2017.

The commencement of all of these projects seems to have come at once, so from now on the rule is, never think that “nothing” is about to happen! Sometimes a little bit of space helps to see clearly what we are supposed to be doing. Don’t forget to catch up on my new single and all the news at helensandersonwhite.com.
