Interview: Matt Kane
The UK's Matt Kane is just releasing his brand-new song 'One Name'. Having previously been a worship leader at Kensington Temple, Matt has a fascinating background and an exciting future. LTTM chatted with Matt about how he went from nearly being in a major boy band, to touring the UK with a world famous musical, and then to releasing worship music.
For those who haven't heard of you before, can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got involved in making music?
I’ve been writing and singing songs from a young age, my first song was called ‘fun, fun, fun, (I keep moving, I keep grooving)' it was a sure fire hit lol. I then found myself being picked for musicals at schools and when I was 16 I was approached by a major record company for a boy band. That didn’t work out but was an interesting time figuring out who I wanted to be as an artist going forward.
You're currently touring the UK with 'Motown the Musical', what's that experience like?
It’s a great blessing and opportunity. Motown is a classic sound and working with some of the original people of The Motown dynasty has been quite something. The cast are amazing and it’s been awesome getting to know new people and all while doing what I love.
Tell us about your new single 'One Name' and what the inspiration behind it was?
The verse for One Name came to me at 2 o clock in the morning. I was asleep but woke up to this melody in my head. I wrote it down and went back to sleep. Then I got up in the morning and began to work the song out. I then took it to a friend of mine Jonathan Miller who’s a great worship leader/song writer and he helped me tidy it up and place some chords.
Can we expect an EP/album from you before too long?
I’m praying so. I have a few songs I’d like to develop. My next single should be ‘I will praise’ it’s another upbeat song and I’ve been sitting on it for a while.
What message would you like people to take from your music?
That God is great and worthy to be praised. Cliche for some but the more I develop my relationship with a Christ I realise that he really does require us to worship him with all our being. That it’s not a strange thing to live your life fully and out loud for God and that it pleases Him when we give him our all.
If you could work with any songwriter, who would it be and why?
Honestly, I’d love to work with Lauryn Hill. Ever since I first heard Miseducation I was inspired to write thought provoking and intentional songs. For me that album is the best ever made.
How would you define success in your career as an artist?
I think to stay true and to be authentic. To serve people what they need in a way that can receive. If I manage that I think that’d be success and obviously remembering at all times who it’s for.
What is your favourite album of all time?
Other than the Miseducation I’d have to say Folklore by Nelly Furtado and Israel houghton Alive in South Africa is my favourite worship album
You're stuck on an island, it's hot, you only have enough battery life left to listen to one song on your phone. What track is it?
Sinach - Waymaker
What does the next year hold for you?
I finish touring with Motown in January so that’s a season change right there. I pray that whatever it be Jesus be the centre. I’m hopeful and expectant.
