TobyMac - Eye On It
Last modified: 31 Aug 2012
This is the fifth studio album from TobyMac
. Eye On It
has already been touted at his best album to date and after a few listens I can't see much wrong with it. I personally think it's his most complete album, it feels like every track is as good as the one before. But more about that later.
'Eye On It
' follows up the former DC Talk singer's fourth album, the Grammy-nominated and Dove award winning 'Tonight
' (2010), which was certified Gold with sales of 500,000 meaning that all four of Toby's solo albums have now received RIAA Gold status.
The album opens with the a great dance beat that would get anybody wanting to dance. Me Without You
is a catchy start to the album and is a great upbeat opener with TobyMac doing what he does best. The album suddenly takes on a slower beat with second track 'Steal My Show'
, you could even describe it as a pop ballad track.
Title track Eye On It
blasts the album back into the dance anthem genre, this isn't one for the light hearted. It could be used in clubs or at parties and will bring a smile to your face. This is one epic tune and one of my favorite tracks yet by the legend that is TobyMac.
deals with the topic, surprisingly, of forgiveness and how we all mess up sometimes. The song features the brilliant Lecrae who adds his own style to the song. TobyMac has always written upbeat songs with uplifting lyrics, overlaid with great beats, and the track Speak Life
is no different. TobyMac has this knack of creating a great tune that you can play to any friend or family member.
I suppose my one criticism of this album has to come in the fact that the album jumps too easily from up-and-at-them dance tunes to more radio-friendly pop tracks. The excitement of the dance tracks sometimes don't flow so easily into the more poppy mainstream songs.
My favorite parts of this album are those uplifting dance tracks. But then up pops a track like Family
which just blew my socks off. It's beautiful with its piano and orchestral sound, nearly drawing me to tears. "I want to fight for what we got, cause I believe in Family"
. This track really proves TobyMac knows how to make any kind of song sound amazing.
There are so many great tracks on this album, and when I said this was probably Toby's best album, I don't think many would disagree. With this album you will find yourself dancing, thinking, crying and dreaming, but especially dancing. There aren't many albums these days that get this old man up and dancing. Eye On It
does that. Now come on friends, grab your dancing shoes and let's show them how it's done.
